Sometimes autonomy is even seen as something for the Einzelgänger: someone who mainly follows their own path and pays little attention to others.But what if autonomy is not a movement away from connection, but a condition for it?What if true connection only becomes possible when you are rooted firmly enough within yourself to be present freely, consciously, and responsibly? Not from dependency. Not from adaptation. Not from resistance. But from inner clarity.In this article, I explore autonomy as a path toward mature connection. Not as isolation, but as a form of inner ordering that enables you to meet yourself, the other, and the greater whole on a deeper level. <h3 id="c9beb83e-85ba-4708-9446-3ace17d1c297" data-toc-id="c9beb83e-85ba-4708-9446-3ace17d1c297" style="text-align: left; font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.2;">What is autonomy?</h3>The word autonomy comes from Greek and is composed of autos, meaning “self,” and nomos, referring to law, rule, or order. Literally, autonomy means living according to your own inner order. That sounds simple, but it requires a great deal of awareness.Autonomy is not the same as “doing whatever you feel like.” That is more impulsiveness than freedom. True autonomy requires self-knowledge, freedom of choice, and responsibility. You explore what is true, valuable, and guiding for you. Then you act accordingly, with an awareness of the consequences of your choices for yourself, for others, and for the environment in which you live and work.Within ISEMI, I see autonomy as a creative aspect of consciousness. Every phase of personal development asks the question again: who am I now, what do I stand for, and how do I want to act? You do not become autonomous once and for all. You develop autonomy again and again, in every stage of life, in every relationship, and in every professional role.In the symbolism of ancient Egypt, we can recognize this in the images of Atum and Ra. Atum is often seen as a self-generating creator god: a deity who comes into being from the primordial waters. Symbolically, this can be understood as the capacity of consciousness to form itself from potential. Ra, the sun god, represents light, consciousness, and cyclical renewal. His daily journey across the sky and through the underworld shows how consciousness continually appears, descends, transforms, and is born again.As a symbolic image, Atum-Ra therefore points to cosmic autonomy: self-creating, self-sustaining, and at the same time connected to a greater order. Here, autonomy is not separation, but participation in a greater whole. <h3 id="aba37055-ace0-44ed-97e9-98c50b1c5c65" data-toc-id="aba37055-ace0-44ed-97e9-98c50b1c5c65" style="text-align: left; font-size: 20px; line-height: 1.2;">Autonomy as a professional basis</h3>For coaches, trainers, leaders, and facilitators, autonomy is not a luxury but a professional foundation. Anyone who wants to guide others must be able to observe themselves. You need to learn to recognize your own patterns, examine your own reactions, and take responsibility for the influence you have.Without autonomy, you run the risk of acting from adaptation, a need for recognition, old loyalties, or unconscious resistance. You may think you are helping the other person, while in fact you are responding from your own need for control, confirmation, or safety.Autonomy makes professional action clearer and more refined. You can better distinguish what belongs to you and what belongs to the other. You can be close without losing yourself. You can set boundaries without becoming harsh. You can provide direction without dominating. And you can remain open without becoming dependent.That is why, within ISEMI, autonomy is closely connected to inner strength. Inner strength is not the power to control everything, but the strength to remain present. Even when things become uncomfortable. Even when you are touched. The cards The Wheel of Fortune, Justice, and The Hanged Man together reveal a development of awareness, responsibility, and surrender.The Wheel of Fortune reminds us of the cyclical movement of life. Situations change. Patterns return. Themes continue to present themselves until we learn to recognize them consciously. Autonomy begins here with observation. Where do you react automatically? Where do you allow yourself to be swept along? Where does life repeat a pattern that asks for awareness?The Wheel shows that autonomy does not mean controlling everything. We live in a reality that is constantly moving. There are relationships, systems, circumstances, and forces that influence us. Autonomy does not arise by stepping outside this movement, but by learning how to relate to it.Justice brings the next step. This card is about balance, clear insight, and responsibility. Autonomy asks you to look honestly at your choices, your motives, and the consequences of your actions. In many Tarot traditions, the figure of Justice looks with open eyes. That is meaningful. Autonomy does not ask for blindness, but for clear seeing.In terms of Transactional Analysis, we can think here of the Adult ego state: the part within us that observes, investigates, weighs things carefully, and makes conscious choices. Not from old adaptation. Not from rebellion. But from inner clarity.The Hanged Man adds a subtle layer to this. This card shows that autonomy and surrender do not exclude one another. True autonomy does not mean rigidly clinging to your own will. It also asks for the ability to view reality from another perspective.The Hanged Man reminds us that freedom does not only arise from choosing a direction, but also from being able to let go of what no longer fits. Surrender here is not passivity. It is mature receptivity. Freedom creates space, but it also confronts us with responsibility. When no one else determines who you must be, the question arises: who am I really?Fromm distinguishes between freedom from and freedom to. Freedom from is about becoming free from external limitations, imposed structures, or authority. That is important, but not yet sufficient. Freedom to is about the capacity to actively shape your life from values, creativity, and inner direction.Autonomy makes this positive freedom possible.Yet freedom can feel uncomfortable. When people break away from old certainties, they may feel lonely, uncertain, or directionless. Instead of developing autonomy, they sometimes seek support in conformity, authoritarian systems, or beliefs that relieve them of the burden of responsibility.This makes Fromm’s work still relevant today. Even now, we often confuse freedom with having choices. But having many choices does not necessarily mean that you are free. You may appear outwardly independent while inwardly still being led by fear, adaptation, or the need for approval.Autonomy requires courage. The courage to get to know yourself. Autonomy sounds like being yourself. Connection sounds like taking the other person into account. Yet mature connection arises precisely where the two come together.When connection comes at the expense of yourself, it becomes dependency. You adapt, hold yourself back, or make yourself smaller in order to preserve the relationship. On the outside, there may appear to be harmony, but inside you lose contact with your own truth.When autonomy is lived without connection, it can harden into distance. You may follow your own path, but lose sensitivity to the other and to the greater whole.True connection arises in the middle.You are yourself and you remain open to the other. You take your place and you acknowledge the place of the other. You follow your inner direction and you remain willing to listen, learn, and attune.Autonomy does not mean: “I do whatever I want.”Autonomy means: “I know who I am, I take responsibility for my choices, and I remain connected with the life around me.”This is where the deeper meaning of autonomy in connection lies. You do not need to use the other to feel complete. Nor do you need to lose yourself in order to remain connected. When you are connected with yourself, you can be more freely present with others. You need to control less, prove less, and defend less. Autonomy makes your perception clearer, your choices more conscious, and your presence stronger. It helps you take responsibility for your influence without taking over the responsibility of the other.Autonomy and freedom strengthen one another. The more you develop your autonomy, the freer you become to live and work in alignment with your deepest values.
